The Angel Life: How To Make It As A Victoria’s Secret Model
Before they can walk in the show, models must undergo rigorous auditions that ensure they not only look unnaturally fit but also embody the brand’s girl-next-door persona. In hair and makeup, these hyper-friendly characters posed for selfies and discussed their workout regimes with effusive enthusiasm.
“I shoot a lot of swimwear and underwear so I’m pretty much ready but for the show I do tend to eat a little cleaner, I cut out sugar and alcohol,” said Josephine Skriver, a 22-year-old Danish model who has walked in two previous Victoria’s Secret shows. “I have an amazing trainer–he whips my ass,” Skriver smiled, as a pedicurist lacquered her toenails with a second coat. Soon after, the models were ushered off for final outfit adjustments ahead of the night’s display.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: A $50 Million Catwalk
Front-row for the evening was Kris Jenner, scion of the Kardashian/Jenner clan, who looked resplendent in a red, green and blue sequin Balmain number. Jenner has steered the reality TV family to multimillion earnings–Kim Kardashian banked $52.5 million this year, while Kendall earned $4 million to join the world’s highest-paid models ranking. Flanked by model Tyson Beckford and seated just in front of The Roots’ Questlove, Jenner screamed Kendall’s name when she appeared in her first “Boho Pyschedelic” look, which included a “very sexy lace and fishnet strappy ring-back thong” according to the show’s handouts.
The show may have opened with Angel Behati Prinsloo, but Jenner’s appearance rendered the crowd’s first eruption of cheer beyond polite clapping. That was bested when Adriana Lima appeared. A Victoria’s Secret Angel since 2000, Lima has the lingerie deal to thank for a chunk of her $9 million yearly earnings, which make her the world’s second-highest-paid model behind former Victoria’s Secret Angel Gisele Bundchen. Now 34, Lima is the brand’s grand dame, and its fans respond to her with aspirational adoration.
As she strode down the catwalk in dusty pink underwear to a live
soundtrack provided by British singer Ellie Goulding, the woman beside
me practically jumped out of her seat in excitement. (She and
her attorney partner had flown in from Florida for the event; their
friend was one of the organizers.) Lima paused at the end of the runway
and raised her hands up like an arena touring musician, as if to say
“Come on!”
Inside The Earnings Of Taylor Swift’s Girl Gang
An outfit that could have been a ”sexy snowboarder” Halloween costume included an embroidered puffer jacket unzipped to show a push up bra. A pair of reflective goggles rested atop flowing locks. Fake snow in the form of cellophane shreds rained onto the audience as they clapped. Next up: Sporty little pieces from their PINK USA collection which included a neoprene wetsuit and bikini suitable for a “sexy surfer.”
Finally, the finale: Fireworks. Not literal fireworks, but rather a lingerie series that included LED wings and a $2 million Fireworks Fantasy Bra created by billionaire jewelry makers Mouawad. With diamonds, blue topaz and yellow sapphires set in 18 karat gold, the hefty bra was symbolic of the show: over the top, flashy and fantastical.
The Weeknd reemerged to perform his chart-topping “Can’t Feel My Face” and a clan of rowdy men in suits took to their feet. Soon the whole audience was standing and cheering. In front of me, an excited Dad and his college-going daughter clutched each other. And then the entire cast reemerged, striding down the catwalk in pairs before breaking into brief long-legged dances.

Just like that, the lights went out and guests teetered to the exit, shaking the plastic snow from their hair. Behind me, Magic Johnson’s daughter, Elisa, hotfooted it for an awaiting car.
Outside, rapper Tyga looked for his driver in the drizzling New York night. “Over here,” a burly bodyguard shouted, gesturing down the block.
